People are mad that Spider-Man is black, Big Surprise

spidergloverSo earlier this week Marvel released an image of the kid who will be replacing Peter Parker as the new Ultimate Spiderman and to everyone’s surprise He was black.

Now being African American myself, I knew what this would bring and I am sure Marvel knew what was coming as well. For the last 2 days, there has been a torrent of negative push-back at this idea mostly centered on the characters race.

Many Americans who have had their panties in a knot since President Obama took office have used this latest bit of news to strengthen their argument that white folk are being oppressed and Blacks and Hispanics are taking their jobs, even the fictional super hero jobs it seems. I have even read some stuff from those who think that this new character is somehow related to the Obama Presidency and it’s just another PC, liberal attempt to harm conservative America.

I am not surprised by this, though I am surprised that others are surprised.

Yes, things are a lot better in this country when race is involved and yes there are many communities and groups of friends and families that are multi-racial and living harmoniously and happy. However, just because racism is no longer socially acceptable doesn’t mean people have changed their minds about the subject.

From what I can tell, most of the people who are upset by Spider-Man being black don’t even read comics. They are just responding to seeing a white face now being black and that scares them because they feel like their life is going to be harder if people of color are allowed to succeed.

And they should be scared….

Not scared of Black people taking anything from them, but scared that everyone is being judged by how hard they work and not by stereotypes and hate-filled rumors.  So if you went through life believing that everything was going to go your way just because you are white, then yeah I guess it is looking pretty scary these days.

However, no one stole Spider-Man’s job from him, Peter Parker died in battle with the Green Goblin and now the new guy is black. Do you know how many black people live in New York? A lot, so the odds of Spider-Man being black are pretty good.

Spider-Man himself once joked about the possibility of him being black under that mask. Because the guy is covered from head to toe.

If you are, mad about the New Spider-Man being a black kid you have to ask yourself why. Because if you really are that wound up about a fictional black guy putting his fictional life on the line to save the day from fictional danger, then what does that really say about you?
