It’s all right ’cause it’s all white

There was just the whisper of an idea that Idris Elba (A black man) might be a good actor to play James Bond and half the world went into panic mode.

However, it has been confirmed that Scarlett Johansson will be playing Major Motoko Kusanagi in the upcoming Ghost in the Shell film and I haven’t heard much outcry about a White American playing a Japanese character, though I am sure the film will be written to fit with Johansson’s look and nationality.

Personally, I am tired of Johansson in these kind of films but I don’t really care that she isn’t Japanese. I doubt the film will be anything like the manga or anime.

However, I wonder, what if Paula Patton, Zoe Saldana, or Kerry Washington were cast as Major Kusanagi?

I assume it would be on all the 24-hour news channels and all of talk radio would be on fire with talk of how it is not right.

It’s funny that just thinking about Donald Glover as Spider-Man or Idris Elba as James Bond causes wide spread panic, but a white person playing a traditionally non-white role is just business as usual.
