Lady Gaga performed at the Academy Awards and she seems to have surprised many with her ability to actually sing.
I don’t much follow Gaga, however I did come across this video a few years ago of her singing and playing piano before she was ‘super famous’ so her abilities don’t shock me, however a lot of entertainment media is reporting about her unexpected outburst of talent.
Kristi Capel, an anchor for Cleveland’s Fox 8, reported about Gaga and oddly used the word “jigaboo” during Monday morning’s coverage of the Academy Awards.
Personally, I think she meant to say ‘Hullaballoo’ but for some reason ‘Jigaboo’ is what came out.
For those who don’t know, According to Dictionary.com, “Jigaboo” is an “extremely disparaging and offensive” term for black people. Culture blogger Rafael Otto writes that the term was coined as description of dancing black slaves in the 1800s.
So obviously, there was a bit of backlash as soon as folks heard what was said.
Capel instantly went online and apologized.
“I apologize if I offended you, I had no idea it was a word or what it meant. Thank you for watching,”
