10 things Muppets have already shown us they are capable of

Recently there was a bit of an uproar over a petition going around asking if Bert and Ernie should come out of the closet and get married.

Sesame actually responded to all of this saying;

“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Now personally I agree with most of what Sesame Street is saying here. Bert and Ernie are not gay. But to say that  Muppets don’t have “Sexual Orientations” is just stupid. I don’t know why they said that, as if being gay would be impossible for a Muppet.  

Here are 10 things Muppets have already shown us they are capable of.

10. Muppets can get married

I saw it. It was a movie event, Kermit the Frog Married Miss Piggy. I guess Muppets do have an orientation when that orientation leads to frog and pig marriage.

9. Muppets can have feelings

If Bert and Ernie are best friends then obviously Muppets are able to care for one another. I seem to remember The Muppets showing compassion for one another all the time. I have seen them cry and laugh and even annoy and hate each other at times.

8. Muppets can have kids

There are baby Muppets. I have seen them. There is Baby Natasha and of course The Muppet Babies. Muppets have parents and Muppets have grandparents so we are led to believe that they reproduce. However, I am not sure, if they are having sex or if a Muppet Stork is delivering them.

7. Muppets can be Outcast

So apparently, Muppets can have poor social skills. They can be jerks and kinda hateful at times. It is not all nice all the time. However it seems the more bitter of Muppets are homeless and live in trashcans.

6. Muppets can have jobs

It seems that Bert and Ernie are at least roommates, which means they must have money to pay rent and split the utility cost, which means they have jobs of some sort. I know Kermit the Frog has held down a few jobs. Grover has had and been fired from many jobs from what I can remember. So yea Muppets work like the rest of us.

5. Muppets can be black and proud

Muppets seem to come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and species groups. However, some seem to be African American as well, or at least have hair similar to those of us of African Descent.  I seem to recall plenty of other Muppets have other cultural and racial characteristics as well.

4. Muppets can get sick

Muppets get sick; they catch colds and go to the doctor. There is even a Muppet in South Africa with Aids. They have Muppets in wheel chairs, so obviously Muppets are supposed to have biological functions.

3. Muppets can have Vices

Speaking of Biological functions, what’s up with Cookie Monster and his cookie craving, or any of other Muppets with their wants and needs. Young Muppets often want to eat junk food and older Muppets teach them to eat healthy. Therefore, Muppets do eat, drink and enjoy life; they do develop preferences and with preferences can come bad habits and abuse.

2. Muppets can have Daydreams, Hopes and Beliefs

Muppets have been shown to dream and want things they do not already have. They learn and grow. They make goals and work toward achieving them. They also dream of the impossible and are humbled by their failures. They celebrate holidays based on their personal faiths.

1. Muppets can Die

Yes, Muppets have been known to die. They are not as immortal as we would imagine them to be. They can be killed or die of old age. Elmo’s Uncle was killed overseas fighting in the war just last year. So yeah we let Muppets fight in wars and die for what they believe in.

So if you can fall in love, get married, have kids, love cookies, have a job and even die for your country then yeah being gay just might be in the cards too someday.
