Spider – Man is what??!!

Miles-Morales-kfkfkI wake up today to find out that the new spider-man is black.

Well Half Black, Half Hispanic, but obviously not white.

Basically, I hear this is partly to do with that whole “Why can’t spider-Man be a black kid?” thing that came up last year when fans thought it would be cool if Donald Glover “an African American” were to play Peter Parker in the upcoming movie.

Obviously, the movie role went to a Caucasian person but the comic book world took notice. Recently Peter Parker the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was killed off and this new kid, Miles Morales will be donning a sleek new costume and replacing him.

Now I must mention that this takes place in the Marvel Ultimate Universe, a line of comics that revamp or completely redo comic storylines. So, Peter Parker is still alive, well and white in the regular Marvel Universe. However, The Ultimate Universe has a way of creeping into the main one. Nick Fury who is African American in the ultimate universe has become Black in all the new cartoons and movies. Perhaps in a few years Miles Morales will be in Movies and Cartoons as well.

The DC Universe tried doing something similar to this with Firestorm a few years ago. However, the original Firestorm came back from the dead and took it back from his Black replacement.

The Ultimate Universe however, has a way of keeping dead characters dead, unlike the more traditional comic universes. So Peter Parker will most likely not be coming back to reclaim his mantle.

I personally do not really care about any of this as a comic book fan, because I did not much read Ultimate Spiderman before and I will not read it now. However, I do think it is cool to show heroes living on through other people and I think it is great to show a black kid being heroic and fight to save the day.

Miles will be making his debut as the new Spider-Man in Ultimate Fallout Issue 4, out Wednesday, July 3rd,

I hear they are adding a black guy to the Bat Family as well, I guess comics are starting to reflect the world a bit more realistically and also reflect the fans of color and show that black kids all around the world can have heroes look like them as well.
